Colonial Living Leaders Guide takes dads, mentors, and boys on a four-week journey into life in Colonial America. Through hands-on projects, traditional games, and activities that explore how colonial families lived, worked, traveled, and ate together, boys will discover the importance of serving others, helping their families, and following God’s example. Each week provides opportunities for dads and mentors to build relationships with their boys while teaching valuable lessons about responsibility, obedience, and serving others.
Practical Purpose: Introduce boys to everyday life in Colonial America through hands-on activities that encourage creativity, teamwork, problem-solving, and meaningful interaction with dads and mentors. Boys will experience some of the chores, games, transportation methods, and food preparation practices that were part of colonial family life.
Boys Will Learn:
How colonial families worked together to accomplish daily chores and provide for their needs.
How children entertained themselves with simple games and homemade toys before modern technology.
How colonial families traveled by foot, horseback, wagon, and raft.
How families prepared meals and gathered around the table to enjoy the food they worked together to produce.
Why listening to parents and other trusted leaders is important.
How serving others, contributing to family responsibilities, and working together reflect God’s example.
Projects:
Butter Making: Make homemade butter by shaking heavy cream in a jar, discovering how colonial children helped their families with everyday chores.
Clay Marble Making: Create colorful clay marbles and learn to play traditional games enjoyed by colonial children.
Miniature Raft: Build a small raft using sticks, twine, and a simple sail, then test it on water to explore colonial transportation.
Colonial Dinner Over a Fire: Prepare a simple colonial-style meal in foil packets, cooked by adults over a fire or grill, and enjoy eating together as a family.
Optional Four-Week Colonial Journal: Create a journal imagining life as a colonial child, recording experiences with family chores, games, travel, and food throughout the module.
Spiritual Goals:
Understand that every member of the family has an important role and that serving others is part of God’s design (1 Corinthians 12:14).
Recognize that God has given us time for both work and play, and learn to use that time wisely (Ecclesiastes 3:1).
Learn the importance of listening to and following the wise instruction of parents (Proverbs 1:8).
Understand why God calls us to respect and obey those who have been given responsibility to lead and care for us (Hebrews 13:17).
Develop a willingness to serve others, contribute to family life, and follow God’s example through everyday acts of obedience and helpfulness.
