You could go down the Bible story road. Jesus Washing the disciples feet… you could even do a footwashing . Joseph did end up changing the world, but it was his consistent setvanthood and faithfulness in everyday things that led to that in his life. You could have everyone consider all of the service they receive

The windows washed, the food shelves stocked, cars washed, garbage taken away. Consider life without service.

Do you have any suggestions for a weight requirement on the Semis?

Rex. Getting men involved can be a hurdle, but your described situation offers the optimal opportunity. This is a need to take to the men of the church. A perfect opportunity to give a man purpose. There is no greater call we can answer than to be the tool God uses to unlock a young person’s potential. We know the statistics on fatherless boys, and we know the difference a man can make in their life.

Pray about the men and for the men in your church (or other Christ-following men you might know), and pray that the Lord will begin to lay the names on your heart of particular men to approach with this need of a surrogate/spiritual father. A retired guy might be the answer. A younger guy without kids might be the answer. Who knows who God might have prepped just for this occasion.

Next, begin to approach these men personally. Share with them this great opportunity to speak into the life of a boy who needs a godly man speaking into his life. Share how the culture of Brigade gives a male friendly/comfortable natural atmosphere for this to take place. Share the call…

If the candidate is uncertain, give them a chance to come a see the program without committing to the boy. Then show them how they can speak into the boys life through a commitment to him and the program. Describe his role and how the team of leaders will help him accomplish it.

    Blessings

It is always good to evaluate the successes and weaknesses of your year when it is fresh. Go back to the core objectives of Battalion (see “Building Men”) and assess how well they were accomplished in each area. After assessing the strengths and weaknesses, brainstorm on how to improve your next season. Be intentional and calculated. You usually should not make wholesale changes, but adjust in ways that you can evaluate what is making differences in your ministry. Intentionality in engaging activities and achievement that builds relationship for the purpose of discipleship is the key to all areas of Battalion.

Do not forget the personal aspect of this process. As men, it might be easy to focus on the mechanics of the program. However, Battalion is all about building into the lives of young men, as well as the adult men. Real improvement in ministry takes place by investing in individuals (one another) and helping each person (one another) develop their gifts through the Battalion process.

Unfortunately no concise document at the moment. The Building Men book covers it well and the introduction to each of the Quest Series: Battalion achievement guides explain it to a degree.

There is no “one size fits all” in my opinion, but here are a few ideas…

If the young man has a father who is a Christ-follower, these are usually the strongest mentors. However it is also healthy to be sure other men are speaking into their lives as well, as time goes on.

We connect guys with lieutenants and take at least 15 min. during the Brigade night to encourage and check off achievements.

I would encourage a discussion with each young man to see if there is a man in his life that he desires to be his mentor. Be sure to consider proper vetting and also have a list of men who are willing to mentor guys who might not have their own candidate.

Sometimes we will utilize the achievement books as a topic driver (Adventure Trails or Leadership Trails.) Choose a few key achievements and draw from the Bible focus of that achievement. This way we help the guys accomplish some achievements, or get a head start on them at least.
