History of Trains Leaders Guide

History of Trains Guide takes dads, mentors, and boys on a four-week journey through the history of trains, from early steam locomotives to modern high-speed rail. As boys discover how trains work, build their own train cars, and explore the importance of teamwork, planning, and perseverance, they will also learn what it means to serve others, trust God’s plan, grow stronger in faith, and share the good news of Jesus Christ.

Practical Purpose: Introduce boys to the history and development of trains through hands-on building projects, games, and activities that encourage creativity, problem-solving, teamwork, and meaningful interaction with dads and mentors.

Boys Will Learn:

  • How trains developed from early steam locomotives to diesel engines and modern high-speed trains.
  • How different parts of a train work together to move people and cargo.
  • How railroads helped connect communities and changed transportation.
  • How planning, cooperation, and perseverance helped make railroad construction and technological advances possible.
  • How trains carry people and goods to different destinations, providing an illustration of our calling to share the gospel with others.

Projects:

  • Build a Train Car: Create and decorate individual train cars using cardboard boxes, wheels, and axles.
  • Pilot Train Cars: Connect the boys’ train cars and guide them along a railroad track, stopping at different destinations.
  • Ramp Race: Experiment with ramps, weight, and traction to discover how changes affect the movement of train cars.
  • Deliver the Mail: Use the train cars to deliver Bible verses to different destinations, illustrating the importance of sharing the good news.
  • Optional Four-Week TrainTown Project: Work together to build a model town with houses, a church, a school, a train station, and an operating model railroad, culminating in a special gospel delivery activity.

Spiritual Goals:

  • Understand that just as a train needs many parts working together, God has given each member of the body of Christ an important role (1 Corinthians 12:12).
  • Learn to trust God’s plan even when we cannot see the whole picture (Proverbs 3:5–6).
  • Recognize that God continues His work in our lives, helping us grow stronger in faith and become more like Jesus (Philippians 1:6).
  • Discover that Jesus calls us to share the good news and make disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19–20).
  • Develop a heart for serving others by following God’s example through cooperation, encouragement, and sharing the gospel.
