A Brigade Alum I know noticed our Small Engines Battalion Mission Guides. He Says…

I had a small collection of early 1900 gas engines that I displayed at various vintage and antique farm equipment shows around the state . I just had the thought that taking the Battalion men to one of many early farm equipment shows around the country would be a great outing and learning experience, especially for those boys taking the small gas engine mission guides. Practically every state in north America and some Canadian Provinces have these kind of shows. The engineering marvels on display at these shows are something to behold if you are not familiar with them. Engines as large as a small house show up at many of these events. To find out about gas engine or farm equipment shows in your state just go to this link: https://www.farmcollectorshowdirectory.com/. Perhaps this is something a Brigade unit can attend as an outing this summer or fall.

Thank you John B. for this nugget!

When we taught the Small Engine unit (Battalion Leader’s Guide, Book 5), we were able to get 2 dead lawnmower engines from a local repair shop. While we weren’t able to see them working, it was great to let the boys take them apart while we discussed the various parts and what they did, with no worry about whether the engines would work when we put them back together again. (We also discussed what went wrong with the engines, and why it wasn’t practical to repair them, and hence, why they were given to us.)
