Foghorns & Sirens Leaders Guide

The Stockade Foghorns & Sirens: Heeding God’s Warning Leader’s Guide takes boys through a four-meeting exploration of warning signals and the important role they play in recognizing danger and finding safety. Through hands-on projects involving sirens and foghorns, boys discover how warnings work while connecting these concepts to the Bible’s message of sin, repentance, salvation through Jesus, and finding refuge in God.

Practical Purpose: Help boys understand how foghorns, sirens, and other warning systems alert people to danger and guide them toward safety while giving them hands-on experience building and experimenting with working warning devices.

Boys Will Learn:

  • How sirens and foghorns create sound and why different warning signals are used for different dangers.
  • How warning systems are used during fires, tornadoes, tsunamis, air raids, storms, and maritime emergencies.
  • Why recognizing a warning is only useful when a person listens and responds appropriately.
  • How mechanical sirens use moving parts such as rotors, stators, and spinning disks to create sound.
  • How foghorns use low, powerful sounds to warn and guide ships when visibility is poor.
  • How preparation, careful listening, and following instructions can help protect people from danger.

Projects & Activities:

  • Build and experiment with a Disk Siren to discover how spinning disks and airflow create sound.
  • Construct a Rotor/Stator Siren, learning how a spinning rotor and stationary stator work together to produce a warning tone.
  • Build a PVC Foghorn using PVC pipe, a balloon diaphragm, and air pressure.
  • Optionally construct a larger four-meeting experimental foghorn, modifying its resonator, bell, airflow, and tone throughout the module.
  • Participate in games and activities such as Siren Scramble, Air Raid!, Shelters & Storms, and Blind Passage that reinforce the importance of recognizing warnings and responding correctly.

Spiritual Goals:

  • Understand The Danger: all people have sinned and are separated from God (Romans 3:23).
  • Hear The Warning: God calls us to repent, turning away from sin and toward Him (Matthew 3:1–2).
  • Follow The Instruction: salvation comes through confessing Jesus as Lord and believing in Him (Romans 10:9).
  • Discover The Shelter: God is our steadfast love, fortress, deliverer, shield, and refuge (Psalm 144:2).
  • Recognize that, just as sirens and foghorns warn people of physical danger and direct them toward safety, God lovingly warns and guides us through His Word, pointing us toward rescue and eternal life through Jesus Christ.
