Our Battalion Unit 8118 is going to do the Rocketry Mission. What suggestions does anyone have about building the rockets from scratch compared to buying rockets-to-build from Estes?

Estes has 2 bulk packs you can purchase – the Viking and the Wizard – each pack has 12 rockets and the rocket fuel and wadding is included. We like using the kits because it is more economical and everyone is working on the same rocket together. We have the guys paint them as they wish and compete for who’s looks the best. Both these kits have streamer recovery, so less likely to loose then as with a parachute recovery.

Stockaders we use kits and For Battalion aged guys, we always did home made. We spent a couple weeks learning about rocket design and purchased tubes/wood/nose ones in bulk. Some years we made everything from scratch, tubes/nosecones/engines. That however took a lot of prep and time.
